中国人常说:“三岁一代沟,五岁一鸿沟。”

“代沟”,指年轻一代与老一代由于经验、观点、习惯和行为等的不同而存在心理距离或心理隔阂(a situation in which older and younger people do not understand each other because of their different experiences, opinions, habits, and behavior)。

实际上,“代沟”一词是由英文“the generation gap”直译而来,这个概念是美国人类学家M.米德提出的。由于译法贴切而新颖,加上易于记忆,所以马上成了汉语常用语。
