深入解读
Cynical 一词源自古希腊哲学流派犬儒主义（Cynicism）。该主义主张以追求普遍的善为人生之目的，为此必须抛弃一切物质享受和感官快乐。之所以称其为“犬儒”，一是由于其创始人是在雅典一个名叫“快犬”的运动场讲学；二是由于其信徒生活艰难，在大街上讲学时衣食简陋，随遇而安，形同乞丐， 被人讥为犬。
虽然早期的犬儒主义者是根据自身的道德原则去蔑视世俗的观念，但后期的犬儒主义者尽管依旧蔑视世俗的观念，但却丧失了作为准绳的道德原则，形成了一种玩世不恭的愤世嫉俗。
因此到了17世纪60年代后，cynical 就被用来形容人“愤世嫉俗的、不信世间有真诚善意的”以及对人性或动机“怀疑的、悲观的”，也就是认为人们都是受私利或不道德的欲望驱使的，不相信人类真有所谓诚实正直、热情善良等高尚品质，比如：
