Espouse 这个单词比较好记，就是比常见单词 spouse （配偶）的前面多了一个字母 E 。不仅如此，这两个单词也是同源词，都源自于拉丁语 spondere （许诺、订婚）。
其中 espouse 于15世纪中期经古法语 espouser （结婚）进入英语后，最初也是用来表示“与……结婚，同……订婚”或者说“娶”妻，也可以用 espouse sb to sb 表示“嫁”女。不过这个含义现已不再流行。
等到了17世纪20年代后， espouse 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“支持、拥护、赞成”以及“采取、采纳”，常作正式用语使用，多意味着像和妻子结合在一起那样，对理论、思想、事业、信念、生活方式等给予支持，或者与之共享命运和共同经历，比如：
