Gallop 一词源自古法语 galoper （马等飞跑疾驰），15世纪初期进入英语后也是表示此义，以及指“骑马奔驰或使马飞奔”，强调马以最快速度奔跑，这与形容“（马）小跑、慢跑”或“骑马慢跑”的 canter 和 trot 相对，比如：
