在半个月前推送的 小词详解 | hurtle 中，小站（微信公众号：田间小站）就曾提到 hurdle 与 hurtle 十分形似。其中， hurdle 一词源自原始日耳曼语，古英语时期拼作 hyrdel ，是古英语 hyrd （门）的指小词，表示“用相互缠绕的细枝等编成的临时围栏”。
这个概念等到了1822年后开始发展出现在的基本含义指跨栏赛跑时供人所用的“跨栏、栏架”以及跳栏赛马时供马所用的“跳栏、矮墙”，以及到了1836年后用复数 hurdles 表示“跨栏赛”，比如：
