Xu Wei Poem: The Sleeping Beauty –

The Sleeping Beauty[1]

Xu Wei

The chaste rouge spot on her fair arm removed last night,

’Mid grass before jade steps are drunk the dragonflies.

The breeze brings out of palace walls the fragrance light;

Nobody knows it comes from where Lady Yang lies.

Her crimson robe revealed through gauze curtain unfurled,

She sleeps like rosy jade in autumn water sunk.

The painted beauty could still fascinate the world;

No wonder with live beauty the emperor’s drunk.

I try to wake her up by calling birds to sing,

So I arouse the parrot in the western bower.

At sunset she would go to bathe in the warm spring,

Still dreaming of fresh shower for her thirsting flower.
