在黑暗的深冬里
In the dark depths of winter,
一位母亲聆听着她刚出生的幼崽
a mother listens to the first sounds

of her brand new baby cubs.

Let’s call this mama bear “Sky.”

And her cubs are Scout and Amber.

Hi, little guys.

They say the first year of parenting is the hardest.
作为熊类 思凯将很快了解到
Sky will soon learn that, for bears,
这几乎是不可能的
it’s nearly impossible.
差不多一半的熊崽
Almost half of all bear cubs
活不过第一年
don’t survive their first year.
但现在 在这个洞穴的深处
But for now, deep inside the den,
他们是安全的
they’re safe.
那儿温暖舒适
It’s warm and comfy.
度过整个冬天后
And after an entire winter together,
那儿的味道应该会相当难闻
it probably smells pretty bad.
思凯去年夏天辛苦劳作
Sky worked hard last summer,
每天吃90多磅鱼
eating over 90 pounds of fish a day,
储存够脂肪
to store up enough fat
才撑过了开始的头几个月
to last through these early months.
但现在她饿了
But now she’s hungry,
如果她不能很快地进食
and if she doesn’t eat soon,
她的熊崽需要的奶水将干涸
the milk her cubs need will dry up.
他们将踏上漫长危险的旅程
There’s a long, dangerous journey ahead of them.
思凯要把她的熊崽带到海滨去
Sky needs to get her cubs down to the coast,

and she hopes that the salmon will be plentiful this summer.

But there’s no guarantee.

With over five million acres

it’s home to thousands of brown bears.
五个月前
Five months ago,
思凯爬到这片山区 挖掘她的洞穴
Sky climbed these mountains to dig her den.
但现在 这片山区是她的最大障碍
But now, they’re her biggest obstacle.
在能找到一点点食物前
They’ve got to get
他们不得不
all the way across these frozen mountains
翻越这些冻住的山区
before they’ll find even the first hint of food.
很显然 思凯很高兴能离开 这个臭熏熏的洞穴
Sky is clearly delighted to be free of the smelly den.

“Wait up, Mom!”

Maybe a little too delighted.

Nothing like a mother’s gentle touch.
像许多新手母亲
Like a lot of new moms,
思凯没有多大耐心去闲逛
Sky doesn’t have patience for dawdling.

“Come here, you. Come here.”
“呀 妈 别用牙齿”
“Yikes, Mom! Not the teeth!”

“Oh!”
这不会伤害小斯镐 不过还是
This doesn’t hurt little Scout, but still…

Sky has a bit to learn when it comes to parenting.
当她还是单身一熊时 生活肯定更容易一些
Life was certainly easier when she was just a single bear.

Now, she can only go as fast as her cubs.

She has good reason to dish out a little tough love.

They have got an awful lot of ground to cover.

And with every passing day,

the journey will only get harder.

A walk in the warm sun on a bright, spring day
可能看上去挺有趣
may seem like fun,
但暖和的天气使冰雪开始融化
but that warmth starts the melt.
在整个冬天遮挡他们的冰雪
The snow that sheltered them through the winter
成了他们的死敌
becomes a deadly enemy.

Avalanche.

These massive monsters

reach speeds of up to 80 miles an hour.

A wall of snow and ice

barreling over everything in its path.
思凯和熊崽们这次很幸运
Sky and the cubs were lucky this time,

but it’s a good reminder that they need to stay moving.

Amber’s found a smart way to keep up with her mom,
就是搭上她妈妈的顺风车
just hitch a ride.

Just gotta get that toe in there.

但斯镐更有冒险精神
But Scout, being the more adventurous one,
决定用自己的脚来探索
decides to explore at his own pace.
现在他们的旅程已超过了一周
They’ve been traveling for over a week now,
要爬的山越来越陡峭
and the climb is only getting steeper.
在他们爬最后的一座山时
As they climb their final mountain,
斯镐和安伯都竭尽全力
Scout and Amber try their best,
但这当然不容易
but it sure isn’t easy.
他们发现自己有点儿挡着对方的道
They’re finding themselves a little on top of each other.
他们就这样到了山项
They’ve made it to the summit.
可以看到海滨
The coast is now within sight.
从这儿开始全是下山路
It’s downhill all the way from here.
冬天的冰雪 沿着阿♥拉♥斯加的海岸线融化
The winter snow has melted down by the Alaskan coast,

and all that green

offers the promise of something to eat.
安静的牧场
A quiet meadow.

Time for a little rest.
安伯当然很放松
Amber’s certainly taking it easy.

This is one cub who really likes staying close to mom.
而斯镐的表现则像在说他太大了 不能被背着走来走去
But Scout acts like he’s too old to be carried around.

Bear rides are for babies.

Scout can’t believe what he is seeing.

Sky did.
事实上 她妈妈在她小时候 曾带她来过这片牧场
In fact, her mother brought her to this meadow when she was little.

And she’s been coming here every summer since.

All these bears have come down from the mountains.

Scout’s sure he’ll find at least one bear he can look up to.
