To General Hua

With songs from day to day the Town of Silk is loud;

They waft with winds across the streams into the cloud.

Such music can be heard but in celestial spheres.

How many times has it been played for human ears?

The poem “To General Hua” is a work by Du Fu, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, written in about the second year of the Tang Dynasty (761). In the first two lines, the poem depicts the music in a concrete way, which is a realistic description; in the second two lines, the poem boasts of immortal music in the sky, which is a reverie. The second two lines boast of the heavenly music, which is a reverie. The poem has both movement and stillness, and is subtle and intriguing.
