During the romantic period, it was unthinkable

for anyone to study an instrument

who didn’t compose.

– Creativity… – Oh, absolutely.

And re-creativity went hand in hand.

There were no computers. There was no television.
那时候没有电脑 没有电视
– Right. – There were no distractions.

And I’m going to say the unsayable:
我要说些不可言说的：
general education.
通识教育
We have to waste all our time in school
我们必须把所有时间浪费在学校
learning all this stuff.
学习所有这些东西
They were specialized earlier.
以前都是分专业学的
And as to whether that’s a good thing or bad thing,
至于这是好事还是坏事
I’m not gonna say, but it’s completely different.

Specialized in a certain sense.
分专业在一定意义上来说
You specialize, everyone’s gonna get
分了专业 每个人都能
really good at one thing, and then it should be better.

But it’s not really like that.

And you told me when I was 15 I remember you saying this,

because I had started composing then.
因为那时候我是刚刚开始创作
You said, “You should always have a piece

that you’ve composed for each concert. ”

And actually, now with my 88-concert tour,

that’s exactly what I’m doing.

So that’s another thing about your aesthetic
所以有关你的审美还有一件
that I’ve definitely am very aware of,

the idea that you should keep composing.

If you do it yourself… Absolutely.

Then you get closer to the creative process

of the music that you’re playing.

When you reach my age,

and you just say really what’s in your heart.

Every piano is like a person.

They build them the same way.

because human factor of putting everything together.

Then the soundboard, the wood is alive.

Every tree is different.

So the soundboard vibrates.

I think a lot of people spend the bulk of their life

not trying to play better

but by trying to gain more things.

For me, personally,

I can look around, and I can see that

that doesn’t actually

I’m looking at myself, and I’m saying,

what is it that I’m living it for?”

The whole system of life

is geared to make you think about success.

Often, doing my art the best

and equating that with any kind of financial success are just-

they’re just wildly at odds with one another.

Of course they are. And so

They can even get in the way of one another.

So the most “successful” things I’ve done

have been some of the worst things I’ve done.

And sometimes I think that

just playing life more beautifully

But I don’t know how to do it.
